Project Overview

Aspengrove School in Lantzville, BC, needed an upgrade to its gymnasium flooring, even though the existing surface was only four to five years old. The synthetic vinyl floor was already showing signs of wear and, more importantly, offered little to no force reduction for students and athletes. Different flooring colours also had noticeably different surface finishes, creating an inconsistent feel and appearance across the gym.

The school turned to Titan Sport Systems for a new gym flooring solution in Lantzville that could provide better cushioning, greater durability, easier maintenance, and a more professional-looking athletic space. 

The project called for installing a new engineered sprung subfloor and high-performance synthetic surface. The finished system needed to accommodate a busy schedule of basketball, volleyball, badminton, pickleball, and other school activities.  

Challenge

Although the existing floor was only four to five years old, it was already showing signs of wear. The lower-quality synthetic vinyl surface was not designed for the level of heavy, daily activity required in Aspengrove School’s busy gymnasium. Different flooring colours also featured different surface finishes, creating an inconsistent feel underfoot and an uneven overall appearance.

The school wanted more than another replacement surface. This Lantzville school needed gym flooring that offered better cushioning, greater durability, consistent performance, and a more polished look that could withstand basketball, volleyball, badminton, pickleball, and everyday school use. 

The project also came with a tight installation window and a practical challenge: the new 32 mm flooring system changed the finished floor height, requiring existing doors and thresholds to be carefully adapted. Titan Sport Systems needed to address each of these details while keeping the project on schedule and without cutting corners on installation quality.

Solution

Titan Sport Systems worked closely with Aspengrove School to understand what wasn’t working with the existing floor and determine the right long-term solution. The Tarkett LumaFlex gym floor installation was completed in several key stages:

Choosing the Right Flooring System

Titan recommended the Tarkett Sports LumaFlex Elite sprung subfloor system paired with a Tarkett Sports Omnisports Compact 2.0 surface. With ASTM F2772 Class 5 force reduction, the system provides high cushioning and athletic performance while requiring less ongoing maintenance than a traditional hardwood sports floor.

Preparing the Existing Gym

The team removed existing accessories, including the cove base, door thresholds, and floor sockets, to prepare the space for the new flooring system.

Adapting the Entrances

Because the new system added approximately 32 mm of floor height, Titan had custom aluminum thresholds created and trimmed interior swinging doors where necessary. This allowed for smooth, functional transitions at entrances and exits.

Adding the Finishing Touches

Once the Tarkett LumaFlex gym floor installation was complete, Titan finished the space with a new vented cove base, custom game lines, and a centre-court logo. The result was a clean, professional-looking gym built around Aspengrove School’s performance and aesthetic requirements. 

Results

The completed Tarkett LumaFlex gym floor installation gave Aspengrove School the safer, more comfortable, and high-performance athletic space it was looking for.
