Supply and Install New Hardwood Gym Floor at Thomas Haney Secondary – Maple Ridge, BC
Project Overview
Maple Ridge School District initially partnered with Titan Sport Systems to restore the hardwood gymnasium floor at Thomas Haney Secondary School. The original scope included sanding the existing maple floor, repainting the game lines, refinishing the surface, and repairing two damaged sections by removing the flooring, grinding the concrete slab to correct uneven areas, and rebuilding those sections before refinishing.
Once work began, Titan Sports discovered the underlying concrete slab was in significantly worse condition than anticipated. After a thorough assessment, it became clear that localized repairs would not provide a reliable, long-term solution.
Rather than proceeding with a temporary fix, Titan’s team worked closely with the school district to revise the project scope, replacing the existing floor with a completely new high-performance hardwood sports flooring system. The result is a durable, safe, and long-lasting athletic surface designed to support students, staff, and school athletics for years to come.
Project Scope
What began as a targeted repair evolved into a complete replacement after Titan identified significant issues with the existing concrete slab. The project included concrete grinding and levelling in two major sections to meet the required flatness specifications before installing a new hardwood gymnasium floor for the school.
The finished system features Tarkett Sports ClutchCourt Performance Core, a high-performance athletic flooring solution selected to support the school’s wide range of activities, including basketball, volleyball, badminton, and pickleball. By addressing both the structural foundation and the finished playing surface, Titan Sport Systems delivered a safe, durable gymnasium floor that meets the school’s performance needs for years to come.
Challenge
Although the school’s existing hardwood gymnasium floor still had some service life remaining, the underlying concrete slab could no longer provide a safe and stable playing surface for students. Following a detailed assessment, the decision was made to replace the entire flooring system to ensure long-term safety and performance.
The school required a new athletic floor that would be safe, durable, and aesthetically appealing, delivered within budget, and meeting the needs of both students and staff.
Once the existing hardwood flooring was removed, Titan discovered the concrete slab was in worse condition than originally anticipated. This required additional grinding and levelling work by the concrete repair contractor before the new flooring system could be installed. By addressing these unforeseen conditions before installation, their team ensured the new hardwood sports floor was built on a properly prepared foundation, helping deliver reliable performance and long-term durability.
Solution
Titan Sport managed the full scope of the project, beginning with the removal and disposal of the existing hardwood gymnasium floor and retractable bleachers at the school. The team then coordinated with the concrete contractor to identify areas requiring additional grinding and levelling, ensuring the slab met the flatness specifications needed for the new athletic flooring system.
Once the subfloor was properly prepared, the team installed a Tarkett Sports ClutchCourt Performance Core system, selected for its ASTM F2772 Class 5 Force Reduction rating and floating floor design, which provided exceptional athletic performance without placing additional stress on the existing concrete slab.
The project was completed with custom-coloured game lines for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and pickleball, stained basketball keys, and an oversized centre-court logo, delivering a safe, durable, and visually striking gymnasium built for years of student and community use.
Results
The project delivered a brand-new hardwood gymnasium floor for the school, providing a safe, durable athletic surface built for students of all skill levels. The new floor delivers the performance needed for daily secondary school use, while the custom game lines, stained courts, and oversized centre-court logo create a professional-looking space that the school community can be proud of.
Beyond the flooring installation, Titan Sport Systems also coordinated the concrete contractor’s work to ensure the slab was properly prepared before installation began. Although this was outside the original scope, it helped ensure the new flooring system was built on a solid foundation. The completed project met the school’s goals for safety, performance, aesthetics, and budget, and both the school and the Maple Ridge School District were pleased with the final result.
